Get back to the roots of the game

Playing golf from Applecross can involve making a half day, or day trip of it – but the spectacular drives to and from the courses and a good lunch make a great day out. These courses are within easy reach

Playing at any of the wee courses below takes you back to the roots of the game, and there is none of the pretentiousness and hype sometimes found at some of the big name courses on the East Coast. You can of course play 18 holes at any of the 9 holes courses, and many of the holes have two tees for the same green

For those who want a big name experience, there is Castle Stuart near Inverness, 1.5 to 2 hours away. This magnificent links course has hosted the Scottish Open. You could play it on your way across to Applecross

In case of club competitions, it is advisable to call ahead. (The numbers are provided below). Some of the wee courses have honesty boxes in the winter

Lochcarron Golf Course

Lochcarron is the nearest course, forty minutes away over the Bealach. This tricky little 9 hole course starts with a 200 yard par 3 with a 180 yard carry, out of bounds on the left, the sea on the right, and big trouble in the front: good luck making par! Longer handicappers might be well advised to lay up and be grateful for bogey!

Gairloch Golf Club

Gairloch Golf Club, about 1.5 hours drive from Eagle Rock has one of the prettiest and best maintained 9 hole courses you will find anywhere, with holes down to the sea and a great par 5 along the beach. This really is a course not to miss, with very friendly club staff and a tearoom in summer

Sconser on the Isle of Skye

There is a 9 hole course at Sconser on the Isle of Skye, about 1.5 hours drive away. The early holes can be taxing into the wind and the latter holes are really well designed and interesting with some raised greens and blind shots. Holes 7, 8 and 9 are particularly good. The drive from Eagle Rock to Skye Bridge takes 1hr 20, and then it is a further 20 minutes to Sconser. You can combine a game of golf with a look around Skye to make a day trip of it
